Rebrand Case Study
Launching Somebody Slap Me That’s Good BBQ in Hastings, Michigan. Building a Community Presence and Cultivating a Loyal Customer Base.
Problem
Building a Brand Presence in a New Community
Somebody Slap Me That’s Good BBQ, a BBQ catering business led by a husband-and-wife team passionate about real Texas-style BBQ, decided in 2023 to open their first restaurant in Hastings, Michigan. However, moving to a new city presented challenges: their brand was unknown locally, and they faced stiff competition in the restaurant market. To succeed, they needed a way to introduce Somebody Slap Me That’s Good BBQ to the community, generate excitement, and attract a loyal customer base.

Solution
Strategic Marketing and Community Engagement
To meet these challenges, the couple partnered with R King Design Group, which crafted a plan centered on connecting with the local community. The strategy started with research into the Hastings area, including its demographics and local dining scene, which helped us tailor our approach to engage the community effectively.
Two months before the December 2023 opening, we launched a social media campaign to spark interest in the new
restaurant. The campaign included sneak peeks of menu items, fun Texas BBQ facts, and updates about job openings, all designed to create a sense of excitement and connection. Custom menus and local hashtags expanded our reach, drawing attention from nearby towns. In the final week before opening, we started a social media countdown to build anticipation. By sharing the brand’s story and unique BBQ offerings, we built excitement and familiarity with locals ahead of the launch.

Short-term Outcomes
Strong Opening and Positive Community Response
The strategy led to a successful grand opening on December 8, marked by a high turnout and strong customer interest. The restaurant’s welcoming atmosphere and authentic BBQ style were a hit with locals, and initial customers quickly became repeat visitors. Through focused social media engagement, brand storytelling, and
community-centered content, Somebody Slap Me That’s Good BBQ established itself as a new favorite in the Hastings dining scene. The early success set the stage for lasting growth and a loyal customer base in the new community.
